Bucks big man Larry Sanders has been invited to attend the USA Basketball Men’s National Team mini camp in Las Vegas from July 22-25, according to a US Basketball press release. Sanders is one of 27 players who accepted invitations to participate in the mini camp, which includes players like Ryan Anderson, Paul George, DeMarcus Cousins, Jrue Holiday, and Kyrie Irving. The camp is run by Duke University and USA Basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim, Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, and New Orleans Pelicans head coach Monty Williams.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said that many players that attend the mini camps go on to play on the World Basketball Championship and U.S. Olympic teams.

“The group of players we have assembled for the mini camp are extremely talented and very versatile. This is important for each one fo them because we will be evaluating which players will continue to be involved in future USA National Team training camps and teams.”

Players that made U.S. Men’s National Team roster after attending the mini camp include Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Rudy Gay, Eric Gordon, Danny Granger, and Andre Iguodala.

The invitation is one more accolade for Sanders after a breakout year in which he finished third in the NBA Most Improved Player voting while finishing second in the league in blocks with 2.8 per game. He indicated in an interview with Bucks play-by-play announcer Jim Paschke that the invitation was an honor:

“It’s good to see all the hard work pay off. It’s more motivation to work harder.”

As he seeks to build on last year’s success, Sanders will have an opportunity to face off with some of the best players in the NBA in Las Vegas. Let’s hope this offseason goes better than his Summer League experience last year.

  1. This is a great accolade for Sanders. Hopefully he continues to work on his low post offense this summer so he can maybe become a 20-10 guy consistently. Love his attitude, work ethic, and ever-growing leadership abilities. Larry Sanders is a face of the franchise type of guy this city needs.

    • Good call. I for one am sick of the “swag” of Jennings. Yeah sure, you had a good game tonight, if by good you mean shooting 43% on all manner of bad shots, but one that actually matters happens to go in. Sanders! is the man. I don’t really know if we “need” him to start scoring in bunches, as his appeal and talent seem to be defense, but some extra would help, as long as it’s not a hindrence to the rest of his game.
