The Bucks have picked up their team option on forward Gustavo Ayón, according to several reports from Mexican media outlets. The 28-year-old Mexican native will make $1.5 million over the one-year option.
Ayón, who was acquired with Ish Smith and JJ Redick in the deadline trade that send Tobias Harris to Orlando, averaged 13.1 minutes, 4.3 points, and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Bucks in 2013. While he didn’t show as much defensive skill as many of the Bucks’ other big men, Ayón showed glimpses of offensive ability, especially as a passer, in limited playing time.
This move represents the first small step in clarifying the Bucks’ roster situation in advance of the June 27 draft. Ayón is the sixth power forward/center under contract with the Bucks for ’13-14, joining Larry Sanders, Ersan Ilyasova, John Henson, Drew Gooden, and Ekpe Udoh. It’s a safe bet that the team won’t begin next season with all of those forwards and this could be the precursor to other moves as the Bucks attempt to balance out their forward-heavy roster.
