Gus Johnson will be announcing the Milwaukee Bucks next season.
The boisterous announcer, who calls college football and basketball games for Fox Sports, has been hired by the Bucks to call 20 games next season alongside another new addition (but a familiar face) in former Buck Marques Johnson.
Milwaukee’s long time announcing team of John McGlocklin and Jim Paschke will return for a 30th season and work around The Johnsons. Based on Gus Johnson’s interview with Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated, it sounds like The Johnsons may have a future beyond next season in Milwaukee.
Johnson said he’s taking the Bucks assignment on a year-by-year basis “but in my heart of hearts, I hope this is something I get an opportunity to do for a long time.”
Gus Johnson is known for his excited, theatrical calls of late game situations. A “Gus Johnson Soundboard” was created with all of his catchphrases, but at the time I’m writing this, it’s been overloaded with traffic. THE BUCKS ARE ALWAYS BIG NEWS. Johnson is sure to get very excited about Giannis Antetokounmpo more than a few times in the coming season and let us know that the Greek Freak is gettin’ buckets.
There are a lot of great Gus Johnson announcing moments on Youtube, but here’s one that has a good cross-section of moments:
Marques Johnson played the first seven seasons of his career with the Bucks. He is the sixth leading scorer in franchise history and the leading offensive rebounder in franchise history. He’s been calling games for Fox Sports Net and doing morning radio in Los Angeles.
