Bucks fail in the clutch not just once, but twice! Magic 93 Bucks 90

Orlando Magic 93 Final

Recap | Box Score

90 Milwaukee Bucks
Ersan Ilyasova, PF 40 MIN | 6-15 FG | 3-3 FT | 15 REB | 0 AST | 15 PTS | +9

The difference between battling Robin correction:Brook Lopez for boards vs. battling Dwight Howard is ten rebounds. The freaky thing is that Ersan almost always has more offensive rebounds.

Brandon Jennings, PG 38 MIN | 9-19 FG | 3-3 FT | 2 REB | 4 AST | 22 PTS | -6

He had a fiery first and fourth, but was mostly nonexistent in the second and third quarters. Three weeks ago he would have rained hellfire and brimstone on Jameer Nelson and Chris Duhon. Right now he’s settling for long twos and lazy drives. This is mildly frustrating.

Mike Dunleavy, SF 36 MIN | 7-13 FG | 2-3 FT | 6 REB | 1 AST | 18 PTS | +8

My favorite play this season has been Dunleavy running baseline, then someone setting a screen for him as he pops to the wing. Swish. The Bucks run it a lot, but not nearly enough to satisfy my bloodlust for points.

Larry Sanders, C 28 MIN | 6-12 FG | 1-1 FT | 12 REB | 2 AST | 13 PTS | +2

After the game I just wanted to hug Sanders and scream, “It’ll be okay!” Not that he needed any encouragement from me. Rather, I needed to do that for me.

I ended up not hugging him because that would have been weird and I would have been thrown out of the Bradley Center. Sanders had a fine performance marked by his strong defense on Dwight Howard. Howard had 28 points and 16 rebounds, but Sanders forced him into a lot of tough shots and got a few late offensive fouls for the Bucks. Plus, he caught the ball a few times! Imagine that, getting a double-double isn’t too hard when you catch the ball.

Three Things We Saw

  1. More creative play calling needs to happen when the team doesn’t have a true center on the floor. If Dwight Howard is guarding Jon Leuer, then shove Leuer in the weakside corner. Leuer has corner three range, he can make Dwight pay for straying. Plus it keeps Dwight away from the strong side and I can’t stress enough how remarkable he is at swallowing an entire side of the court.
  2. Making up for Bogut isn’t about finding a bigger body to replace him. It’s about replacing his responsibilities. Ilyasova matches all the rebounding Bogut did and more. Sanders is developing very nicely as a defender. He didn’t commit stupid fouls against Howard and he moves well enough to become a solid help defender. There is hope for this frontcourt yet, at least until Ilyasova gets traded.
  3. How many of you called an awful crunch time play? How many of you called two?

Brockman Ruins Things. They All Ruin Things. Magic 94 – Bucks 85

Milwaukee Bucks 85 Final
Recap | Box Score
94 Orlando Magic
Jon Leuer, F 7 MIN | 0-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 0 PTS | -3

The Jon Leuer experience came to a grinding halt because of foul trouble. What a sad day for Wisconsin. A sad day for America. Once Leuer shows Skiles that he can play adequate defense without fouling then his playing time will be limitless. The sooner the better. I’ve had a really bad headache all day and Jon Brockman’s 17 minutes only exacerbated my problem.

Shaun Livingston, PG 29 MIN | 5-13 FG | 3-4 FT | 3 REB | 3 AST | 14 PTS | -15

Tonight’s loss was to the Magic was both similar and different than the last loss to the Magic. Both losses came after the Bucks held a large lead in the fourth. In the first one, the Magic buried the Bucks with a three point barrage. This time the Bucks just couldn’t convert in the paint. There was no better example of this than the many layups Livingston had to alter to get the ball above Dwight Howard’s reach.

Brandon Jennings, PG 31 MIN | 4-20 FG | 4-5 FT | 4 REB | 5 AST | 14 PTS | -14

The effort and energy seem to be back. Also back: the long twos and generally bad shot selection.

Stephen Jackson, SG 12 MIN | 1-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 2 PTS | -10

Part of being professional is saying the right things. Stephen Jackson does that more or less in his Stephen Jackson way which is to say not at all. The other part of being a professional is doing the right things. Playing a mediocre, underwhelming 10-20 minutes every game is not exactly that.

Jon Brockman, F 17 MIN | 0-3 FG | 0-0 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 0 PTS | -25

Ugh.

Tobias Harris, F 16 MIN | 3-6 FG | 2-2 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 8 PTS | +8

Harris is capable of averaging 20 points or more if he ever gets consistent, heavy minutes. His penchant for drawing fouls, efficiency and willingness to play in the post would have a great asset late in the game especially after Dwight Howard’s fifth foul.

Bucks Pull Out an OT Win Over Cavs 113-112

Milwaukee Bucks 113 Final

Recap | Box Score

112 Cleveland Cavaliers
Carlos Delfino, SF 33 MIN | 2-12 FG | 0-0 FT | 7 REB | 3 AST | 5 PTS | +5

One of these days we’re going to see a whole bunch of games in a row where Delfino knocks down a whole bunch of threes.

Or maybe we won’t.

Drew Gooden, PF 31 MIN | 6-13 FG | 5-6 FT | 6 REB | 2 AST | 19 PTS | -9

Kudos to Gooden for taking the game winning charge. No kudos for being crazy. Also, the defense is a complete mess now and it’s mostly because he has no conviction behind his moves. He hedges. Weakly. Which has the fantastic effect of leaving his point guard high and dry and simultaneously leaving his man open.

Brandon Jennings, PG 43 MIN | 8-23 FG | 6-7 FT | 5 REB | 8 AST | 24 PTS | -3

Good news: he’s being aggressive again. Bad news: He shot like he did last year. It has become exhausting just to think about him.

It’s become more and more apparent that Jennings isn’t that good of a defender. Ramon Sessions was slashing to the paint like a mad man. And so has every other point guard Jennings has faced since Bogut has left. He can’t take the chances he takes on defense anymore. A more conservative defense from him would help the Bucks.

Jon Brockman, F 14 MIN | 0-1 FG | 1-2 FT | 3 REB | 0 AST | 1 PTS | +2

Still exists.

Jon Leuer, F 6 MIN | 2-3 FG | 1-2 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 5 PTS | -4

Still exists.

Two Things We Saw

  1. Bucks can’t get a shot off again to end the game. This play was actually much better. Everyone should be much more confident in a crunch time play dependent on Shaun Livingston’s vision and decision making than a weave at the top of the key that’s going to end up in Stephen Jackson’s hands.
  2. Jeremy’s Note: Ultimately, this is two road wins for the Bucks. Those haven’t come easy over the past few seasons. If they are going to make the playoffs and hold off the Knicks and Jeremy Lin, they’ll need to capitalize on opportunities they way they did against Toronto and Cleveland.

The point differential isn’t all that impressive, and that doesn’t bode well for the future, but for the present, wins are wins.

Bucks Suffer Disappointment to Pistons

Milwaukee Bucks 80 Final

Recap | Box Score

88 Detroit Pistons
Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, SF 24 MIN | 3-6 FG | 1-2 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 7 PTS | -15

Gery Woelfel reported that Moute still has knee problems. It’s hurting how he establishes leverage in the post. It also explains why he’s using poor technique with his arms to guard in the post. Moute is keeping his arms extended to push back against guys backing up. Moute knows he has to body up.

Drew Gooden, PF 23 MIN | 1-8 FG | 2-2 FT | 4 REB | 2 AST | 4 PTS | -15

Bad Drew Gooden day. And Gooden was responsible for a lot more gaffs than his one turnover would indicate. He was late to pass, late to notice passes, fumbling everywhere and just generally flubbed up everything.

Brandon Jennings, PG 42 MIN | 7-19 FG | 3-4 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 20 PTS | -10

Jennings followed up a blistering first half with a terrible second half. He was getting open three looks off screens, but he just wasn’t hitting them. What was inexcusable was his defense on Brandon Knight. Without Bogut, he can’t take a lot of the chances that he used to take.
The Bucks have been playing faster and that’s been a boon for Jennings. Detroit slowed him down and Jennings couldn’t respond. The next big point guard step for Jennings is to enforce his style of play regardless of what the other wants.

Jon Leuer, F 4 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 2 PTS | -3

Still exists.

Larry Sanders, C 20 MIN | 1-4 FG | 2-4 FT | 3 REB | 1 AST | 4 PTS | +7

Favorite sequence of the game: Larry Sanders running the fast break and passing to a streaking Tobias Harris for a rousing dunk. I’m telling you guys: POINT-CENTER.

Tobias Harris, F 11 MIN | 2-6 FG | 4-4 FT | 5 REB | 0 AST | 8 PTS | +2

Dude can just score. Subtract his one three from his box score since it was just a half-hearted desperation three and you see a guy who drew fouls nearly every time he missed. He just knows how to score. The problem is that he doesn’t fit well into the “passing is magic” motif that the Bucks have adopted since Bogut went down.

Three Things We Saw

  1. Bucks had 10 assists. Against the Heat they had 30 assists. Passing is magic.
  2. The Pistons doubled teamed the ballhandler early and often. This did a good job of obscuring the passing lanes that the Bucks have been feasting on lately.
  3. The Pistons also slowed down the pace to a snail’s crawl. As of late, the Bucks have been thriving off a quick passing leading to quick scores.

Stephen Jackson: “My situation is going to get better soon.”

January 31st, 2012 Ian Segovia 25 comments

Are you worried about Jackson's influence on Jennings?

“They know how I feel,” repeated Stephen Jackson over and over again after the game against the Pistons. On who “they” were, Jackson would not elaborate, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that he’s talking about John Hammond, Scott Skiles and the Bucks organization at large.

The Bucks are 3-0 without Jackson. Against New York, he was suspended for missing shootaround because he overslept. He was suspended for the Lakers game because he was verbally abusing refs while playing the Bulls. Skiles chose not to play him against the Pistons. According to Jackson, this was the first time that he’s never played in an NBA game he was available to play in.

Without Jackson, the passing looks crisper and the offense looks better. Possessions aren’t wasted on Jackson heat checks. Delfino is playing better perimeter defense. And the team is stocked with better scorers, shooters and distributors. “Scott is right. We are playing well without me in the lineup,” said Jackson. “The rotation is great and as long as we’re winning. There’s nothing for nobody to complain about.”

Jackson isn’t playing well, but he isn’t a locker room cancer. The other players generally adore him. He’s the first one off the bench to high-five everyone during time-outs. He’s around and not playing well, but he’s not undermining any efforts to win. “My situation is going to get better soon,” Jackson said, “Until then, I’m going to support these guys and continue to collect my check.”

Hoopsworld recently ran a report stating the Bucks were looking to ship Jackson.
